The SubwaysBottom of the Hill, San Francisco There are a lot of British indie bands out there and they're easy to find, particularly if you read NME every week. The Subways are one such band, praised to no end for their gritty rock and raw live energy. The Subways started the night off with a song off their new album, the frantic and appropriate "Kalifornia." Their set was a mix of old and new songs, with vocalist/guitarist Billy Lunn asking the crowd to sing along through favorites such as "Oh Yeah" and introducing tracks off the band's new album All or Nothing. Bassist Charlotte Cooper was a blond whirlwind, dancing all over the stage as she played, while Lunn screamed more than sang the lyrics to songs such as the driving "Young For Eternity" and the newer "Shake! Shake!" The Subways gave it their all, with Lunn telling the crowd at one point they were "sweating their arses off." Perhaps because it's been two years since their last release, it took a bit for the crowd to warm up to them. The band was aware of this, repeatedly thanking the audience for standing by them during their absence and coming to the show. Their effort paid off at the end when Lunn initiated a screaming contest and stage-dove into the crowd during the irresistible "Rock & Roll Queen." With their exhilarating performance and new songs such as the intense "Alright" and the searing "I Will Let You Down," the band showed it was indeed worth the wait.
