Best of 2009
- Best Album: Chris Gaffney Tribute Album - Man of Somebody's Dreams
This album was some of the most heartfelt music I've heard all year. Dave Alvin telling stories of him and Gaffney growing up in Artesia was one of the most honest things I've heard come out of speakers in a long time. Calexico's cover of "Frank's Tavern" was absolutely the most far from the original cover on the album, but the beauty in it stood out above all the rest.
- Best Song: Guy Clark -"The Guitar"
As soon as you think that there might be a songwriter or two on par with the late Townes Van Zandt's circle of songwriters, Guy puts out this song and destroys any doubts you might have had. Listen to it and you'll understand.
- Best Book: Charles Bowden - Some of the Dead Are Still Breathing
I'm not entirely sure this book came out this year, but to my knowledge it did. Charles Bowden was referred to me by a friend as it had become the source of inspiration for a song we were writing together at the time. The theme of the song was "City of the Dead" and this book fell right into place. It wasn't till later that I found out that Bowden lives here in Tucson and you can see him hurrying in and out of the local Safeway for a 12 pack. The title alone prepares you for Bowden's writing - dark, honest, and to the point.
- Best Newly Discovered Mexican Food In Tucson: Molca's (7th Ave & Grant Rd.)
Okay, so I don't know that anyone else will put this in their best of list but I felt I had to share my new find. We had just gotten back from a couple Texas dates when our guitar player realized it was Thursday, and that every Thursday this taco stand has $2.00 tortas. We went and holy shit, it was the real deal. Carne Asada tortas with the softest bread, the crispiest vegetables, the juiciest carne... and they were fucking huge! Anyways... I thought it appropriate.
