What I've Been Listening To This Year (some old, some new).
1. John Martyn - Solid Air
I have a coffee table book called "The Mojo Collection" and it has reviews of their fav releases from 1953 through 2003. This review came up in one of my random page turns and after sampling it on Amazon, I had to buy it. I had heard of John before, but never his music. Really beautiful stuff.
2. Jim Ford - Harlan County
Funk + Country = Wow!
3. Son Volt - American Central Dust
Uncle Tupelo was a big influence, as was Son Volt. Definitely my fav release by Jay's 2.0 version.
4. Jay Farrar & Ben Gibbard - One Fast Move Or I'm Gone
Saw them play an intimate club in LA called Largo a few weeks back. Very inspiring set. I've had this one on repeat of late.
5. The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers
Not sure where I heard about these guys, but I really dig the lo-fi approach.
6. James - Hey Ma
Amazing live show. Glad they are back together.
7. Paul McCartney - Ram
Overall, I'm a George guy, but this year I've been really enjoying and appreciating the greatness of Paul.
8. Doug Sahm - Doug Sahm And His Band
I had heard a few of Doug's tunes solo and w/ Sir Doug, but never bought an album. I thought it was time.
9. Ray Davies - Kinks Choral
Ray never disappoints. Includes two of my fav Kinks songs, "Shangri-la" and "Celluloid Heroes."
10. Wilco - The Album
I've heard some fans and press aren't digging the cheeky-ness of the opening track. I disagree. Isn't rock-n-roll supposed to be fun?
