Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, The 11th Hour assesses the toll of our collective carbon footprint on the world—the graphic for the film features the heavy black tread of a shoe in the center of an aerial view of the globe—and offers ways for every individual to make a difference and help ease the toll we’ve taken on the earth. Featuring interviews with environmental experts like Thom Hartmann, Paul Hawken and Sylvia Earle, The 11th Hour offers a terrifying look at what we’ve done and what we’re in for if we don’t change our ways. The film’s companion soundtrack is a perfect blend of hypnotic instrumentals, ethereal soundscapes and moody indie rock earthbeat. Arve Henriksen’s “Chiaro” benefits from lightly played percussion and a single female voice distantly chanting; Dirty Three’s “Lullaby For Christine” is haunting and elegiac and the Cocteau Twins’ “Otterly” is a brilliantly brooding and melodic trance. Elsewhere, Sigur Rós pitch in two stunning tracks (“Sigur 3” and “Svefn G Englar”), Mogwai’s “Mogwai Fear Satan” is a nearly twenty minute opus that builds into a shuddering crescendo and Deaf Center’s “White Lake” is a moving piano ballad. But it’s Lukas Haas’ gently plucked acoustic closer “Kemp” that steals the show here. Brimming with optimism, renascent energy and a kind of elated hope, it reminds us that all is not lost if we’re willing to find our way out of the mess we’ve created.
