"I got a perfect plan/It ain't including you," sings the Tunisian-born Anya Singleton on her debut The Other Side. A sizzling combination of blistering blues and rueful R&B, The Other Side introduces Singleton as one of the purest singers around. Falling somewhere between Dusty Springfield and Joss Stone (minus all the splishy faux hip-hop production), Singleton really knows how to get inside a song and belt her way back out. Check out the sizzling bluesy rocker "Replaceable" or the swaggering funk of "Nevermore," both of which find Singleton demonstrating the sheer muscle of her delivery. A varied eleven-track collection, The Other Side has thoughtful acoustic numbers ("Van Gogh") big pop ballads ("Simple") and gentle soul ("Farewell"). What's so striking about this debut is that Singleton could have hid behind layers of elaborate production, but has chosen instead to opt for a more natural approach and the results are staggering. "I've been more truthful with you than I should have been," she admits on the aching "Stop This Train." We're lucky she thinks we deserved it even a little.
