ALBUM REVIEW

Aaron Stout

Queens Live In Caskets
Monotreme Records

Aaron Stout

Copy Aaron Stout’s debut album Queens Live In Caskets into iTunes and you’ll find it labeled as folk. And while all genres are limiting to a certain extent, this one in particular does not do the album justice. Sure there are songs that qualify as typical folk, like the beautiful “To Prague And Back” with its simple acoustic sound and delicate vocals. Both the steady “Space Station” and the calming “Lightspeed” have that scratchy, recorded-at-home feel to them. However, “Lightspeed’s” trippy intro fits with songs such as the Muse-like “The Coronation” and the brilliant “Story of My Life.” The latter of which is reminiscent of Beck’s work, circa Odelay. That isn’t the only song channeling Beck here—Stout seamlessly mixes different musical styles on songs like the psychedelic country of “Talk Out of Town” and the out-of- this-world “The Ballad of Curtis Jones.” The variety pays off on this album, providing a truly intriguing collection for the listener.
