Andy Yorke
Simple
Chocolate Lab

"There is no greatness where there is not simplicity," Tolstoy once said. It's hard not to think that if he heard Andy Yorke's Simple he'd be one of the first to declare it's many merits. Titular significance aside, Yorke's first solo album is an effort of purity and great beauty. The former singer of Oxford's now defunct (and much missed) Unbelievable Truth, Yorke checks in here with twelve numbers that come brimming with nostalgia, longing and an almost philosophical optimism about the future. Much to recommend, but for starters, there's the gentle rock and sway of "Found The Road"; the cello-flecked "Diamant" and the catchy "Rise And Fall." Elsewhere, "One In A Million" is a gentle pop number; "Let It Be True" showcases the lovely range of Yorke's voice and "Twist Of The Knife" finds the singer confessing, "I don't want the world to change/It has to always be this way." Produced by former Unbelievable Truth bandmate Nigel Powell and featuring UT's Jason Moulster on bass, Simple is a collection without guile or artifice, featuring light production, spare arrangements and simple, beautiful work.
