ALBUM REVIEW

Asobi Seksu

Citrus

Asobi Seksu

"Teach me to lose myself," beckons Asobi Seksu's Yuki on her band's sophomore album Citrus. From the sound of things—the swirling instrumentation, the enchanting vocals and the dreamy lyrics—it sounds as though Yuki is the one doing the teaching here. Filled with moody melodies and straight up pop smarts, Citrus is a beguiling and punchy collection. "Strawberries" has a dark churning that gives away to a compelling falsetto worthy of the Cocteau Twins; "New Years" is a blast of punchy J-Pop and "Pink Cloud Tracing Paper" which finds guitarist James Hanna taking over on vocals, is a shoegazing wonder. Recorded in New York at Gigantic Studios under the tutelage of Chris Zane (Calla, The Cloud Room), Asobi Seksu aren't shy about composing songs that have real texture. That being said, "Red Sea" is a hypnotic seven minute epic; "Goodbye" is a whimsical pop number and "Exotic Animal Paradise" is a mesmerizing excursion into absorbing soundscapes, punctuated by wandering and plaintive bells. Lovely work.
