Atonement

Beginning with the haunting press of typewriter keys set against a wandering piano note, Atonement is a lush and heartbreaking soundtrack. Which makes sense, because Atonement is a lush and heartbreaking film, but what Italian composer Dario Marianelli (The Brothers Grimm, Pride and Prejudice) brings to the score is something so haunting, so imploring, it can only be described as devastating. “Briony” features the aforementioned duet between typewriter and piano; “Robbie’s Note” comes with the crushing stroke of the cello and “Two Figures By A Fountain” evokes the late night movement that sets the events of the film in motion. Wisely weaving the subversive stroke of the typewriter keys through the soundtrack—witness them build to a gripping crescendo in “Cee, You and Tea” then gloat conspiratorially within “With My Own Eyes”—Marianelli underscores the importance of the instrument as the catalyst to the tragedy. Augmented by stunning piano solos courtesy of French pianist Jean Yves-Thibaudet, Atonement is moving and evocatively orchestrated.
