Benjy Davis Project
Lost Souls Like Us
RockRidge

The Benjy Davis Project's fourth full length is not only their loosest and breeziest effort yet, it's also their best. As a frontman, Davis falls somewhere between Adam Duritz and Rob Thomas and his willingness to blend heartbreaking poeticism ("She loves me more than never/Might be bipolar…") with lyrical non-sequitors ("It's kind of funny how we always seem to cook sausage every time we're at a sausage party") make these twelve numbers shimmer with cynicism and sincerity. This is an album of musical variety: There are jangly travelogues ("Mississippi") imploring rockers ("Stay With Me") and blasts of rootsy soul ("Give It A Week's Time"). "Bite My Tongue" has just a touch of Randy Newman by way of Bob Schneider; "Aftermath" is awash in repentance and the album closer "You Just Know" aches away while a whirling Hammond B3 soaks it in sentiment.
