Carol Bui
Red Ship
Exhoh

In the three years since her Everyone Wore White album, Carol Bui became seduced by both Middle Eastern dance and the drums. Red Ship, the Tacoma, Washington native's new effort, reflects her new pursuits in a big way. "Baladi" has a sizzling tribal beat-driven breakdown, while "Hayati Inta" is a syncopated wonder. Coming across like a fierier Florence and the Machine, Bui's Red Ships is a stunning collection of percussive, stinging rockers. A gritty, no-nonsense number, "Mira: You're Free With Me" is a rousing call to arms; "Hafla/Joy" is fueled by an exuberant backbeat, "Evy Reina" practically throbs with regret and "Highlighs" sounds like Bow Wow Wow, had their Burundi beats been inspired by the striking rhythms of the middle east.
