ALBUM REVIEW

Carrie Rodriguez

Love and Circumstance
Ninth Street Opus

Carrie Rodriguez

I like Carrie Rodriguez. She has a pretty voice, sounds a bit like Allison Krauss, plays violin beautifully (so does Allison Krauss). Hmmm. I first started listening to Carrie when she teamed up with the amazing Chip Taylor (sort of like how Allison Krauss teamed up with Robert Plant). They're a bit of a dream team, her and Chip. Enough about all that though, this solo album features twelve covers and I think Carrie picked well: Richard Thompson's "Flattered By The Notion" and "Big Love" by Little Village, and several others by Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings, Buddy and Julie Miller, Hank Williams, M. Ward. Merle Haggard and Bonnie Owens; a literal who's who of the singer songwriter world, dead and alive. This album won't stop you in your tracks but it's very pretty and I especially liked her homage to her great aunt, the famed Mexican bolero balladeer Eva Garza in the form of "La Punalada Trapera." The players on this record feature the usual suspects; Greg Leisz on pedal steel and slide guitar, Bill Frisell on guitar, and Buddy Miller on background vocals. Like I said, no sharp edges, but it's very smooth; check it out.
