Cannonball Jane

Knees Up! E.P.
Gaddycat Records

Cannonball Jane

You should definitely give her an ‘A’ for effort… Sharon Hagopian, aka Cannonball Jane, is described as a multi-instrumentalist and she proves it on her latest E.P. Knees Up! by playing every instrument and doing all the vocals. On “Take It To Fantastic,” she does everything and the result is mostly a success. Upbeat and catchy, the song makes you want to dance with her combination of a solid beat and horns with gritty guitars. But her musical diversity does not extend to her voice here. The press blurb describes her vocals as “pleasing,” and it’s a fitting description. But Hagopian’s voice is merely adequate; it’s neither offensively bad nor especially beautiful. Her backing vocals on the chorus gives it a cheesy feel and makes you think it might have been a good idea to get someone else to sing backup. But she makes up for that with the electric “Breaker Breaker” and the delicate “Bossa Tug.” Both songs highlight the variety of musical elements she incorporates, proving her uniqueness and sincerity truly pay off.
