Cobra Verde
Haven't Slept All Year

"Drinking songs are so typical," asserts Cobra Verde frontman John Petkovic. And to prove this point he then declares with a wink, "Wasted again and I like it." Both a drinking anthem and an anthem about how lame drinking anthems can be, "Wasted Again" is the perfect example of what this Cleveland outfit does best, and that's writing songs that can deconstruct rock and roll conventions and at the same time faithfully follow them. "World Can't Have Her" is a heaving bastard of a track, replete with dirty riffs and panting John Spencer blues; the roots rock shakedown of "Wildweed" brings to mind The Supersuckers, while the chaos pop of "Riot In The Foodcourt" reports, "She is out of control/I am out of control." Meanwhile, the cheeky "I Could Go To Hell For You" is one of the strangest love songs of the year that extends the infernal metaphor as far as it will go without breaking ("We won't see the rising sun/I'm your hellhound on the run"); "Run Away" is a punchy rocker and in spite of all of the hangovers and dead lovers that populate "Haunted Heavens" the song remains a catchy way to close these proceedings.
