ALBUM REVIEW

Dos

Dos Y Dos
Clenched Wrench/Org

Dos

From his tenure with the Minutemen and fIREHOSE, to his solo albums and extensive body of work as a sideman, one thing is for sure and that’s that Mike Watt wields a powerful broom.  Teaming up again with the fellow bass playing partner Kira (Black Flag) the duo’s fourth effort under the banner of Dos is contemplative work.  Instrumentals like “Number Nine” and “The Winds Of May” are gently played tracks that demonstrate a two bass attack can be decidedly affecting.  “Maker Her Me” and “Ties To Bind” find Kira’s voice in fine form; “New Years Waltz” is soaked with wistful musical meandering and “Uncle Mike” is powered by a gentle prowl.  Later, “Only You Will Know” moves with delicate menace, “Om Om Om” is a hypnotic wonder and the cover of Selena’s “No Me Queda Mas” finds Kira’s tongue rolls moving straight past irony and deeply into sadness.
