ALBUM REVIEW
Frazey FordObadiah
I was always a fan of Frazey Ford's former band (the late, great Vancouver outfit The Be Good Tanyas) but Ford's solo debut is much more my speed. Maybe it's the song choices--they all seem to remind me of something (in some cases something I haven't done yet)--but maybe it's the spare and spot-on instrumentation; Banjo on "Firecracker," the pretty, pretty guitar on "Lay Down With You," dollops of Hammond organ and harmonica throughout. There's an easy, relaxed approach to almost every song here and it seems to come from such a happy place. Frazey's vocals are more soulful and up front on this record and on some songs she can remind you of Tracy Chapman, while on others she sounds like Joan Armatrading. The lyrics are all story-telling, which adds to the immense listenabilty of Obadiah. She also does a great cover of Dylan's "One More Cup Of Coffee" toward the end. Frazey Ford should figure into any summer mix CD. It urges you to exhale and look at the sky. The Vinyl Princess |
