Finest Dearest
Finest Dearest
Bloodtown

I always like finding out about bands from where I grew up. Not only
does it seem right to support local bands, but also there is always
that sense of superiority in understanding the hometown references to
people, places and situations. So I was excited to hear the debut by
San Francisco's Finest Dearest. The biggest selling point of the album
is Carly Schneider's voice. It's powerful, standing out on songs such
as the intense "Nightblooming Flower" and the driving "Serious."
Other songs are quite dark in sound, such as in the slamming "Tunnel
Vision." In the emotional "Father," the band slows things
down, and takes it a step even slower with the beautiful ballad "Pendulum."
The best track of the album is the catchy "Your Hometown,"
which features horns and highlights Schneider's vocal talent. Unfortunately,
the album does have some flaws. While "Making a Sound 1,"
is thrilling, with hard-pounding guitars, the similarly named "Making
a Sound 2" and "Making a Sound 3" not only suffer from
a titular lack of but also come off as bland, blending in with the rest
of the songs. Overall, the album brilliantly combines Schneider's stunning
voice with some ferocious rock. A worthy representation of the San Francisco
music scene.
