The Gary

Cedar Fever

Jazz Giant Thelonious Monk gave the world April In Paris and taught us all that "less is more," that it is the space between the notes and transitions that keep you in check with the music. The 7-song EP Chub by The Gary, hints at a band that could do their part to continue that lesson with their own brand of good, tuff rock-n-roll. Notes on this Austin, TX trio suggest influences of Silkworm and Guided By Voices. For myself, I can hear traces of Joy Division in the bass driven backbone of the songs andsomehowa smattering of Uncle Tupelo in the vocal tones and delivery. Listening to the rare gem of an opener, "Expiration," I found myself taking in the different layers of the song. The space between the verses gives over to subtle guitar work, while the drums move the song forward and set the tables for the next versewhich you know you want to hear. This happens throughout all 7 of this EP's songs. This is the kind of stuff you play to put a mellow exclamation point at the end of a great day. Not bad for two guys who met drinking beer while floating down a river in July of '08, added a guitarist and gave us Chub not quite a year later. Well done! VIVA!
