Gee Davey

She Sells Smiles is a six-song EP from Gee Davey, a Long Island trio back from a two-year hiatus with an updated lineup and a new sound. Gee Davey manages that wide territory between alternative rock and pop-punk, a crashing slash of distorted guitars and cheerful, catchy lyrics. "She Sells Smiles" refers to singer DJ Pearlman's daughter, Charlotte—hardly death metal, just a fun mix of Soundgarden, Hüsker Dü, and The Feelers in a small, tight package. So economic in this day and age. It's hard to pick a standout from a mere handful (okay, I added an extra thumb) of songs. "Say Another Prayer" opens the E.P. with a punk-pop party starter. "Last Song" is edgier and harks back to late 70's post-punk arena rock. "Beautiful You" is sweet, like Blind Faith meets Faith No More. "Loling" is silly fun, and "Trial by Self" closes the E.P. with a strong power ballad. Gee Davey—the antidote to emo. Get it now.
