ALBUM REVIEW

Gliss

Love the Virgins
Cordless Records

Gliss

What a voice! From the moment you first play Gliss’ latest release you are instantly drawn in by singer Martin Klingman’s sneering, breathy vocals. His voice is dramatic and a complete turn-on; he sounds like a rock star should sound. And combined with his voice, Gliss’ Love the Virgins is a fantastically gritty, hard-hitting album with an irresistible beat. Alternating between more danceable, upbeat tracks and slower, more drifting ones, it gives you the best of both. Songs, like the electronic “I Want You” and the sexy “Kissing the Blvd,” fall into the former category--you can’t help but want to get up and dance to them. Elsewhere, there’s the drugged-out “Falling To Pieces” and the Mars Volta-ish “All You People,” which is prog rock in all its glory, featuring 2.5 minutes of dead silence before hitting you with slamming guitars. Other songs, such as the pounding, catchy opener “Gimme the Hit” and the driving “Blue Sky,” roll along and rile you up. But it all comes back to Klingman’s delivery. There’s just something dirty about the way he sings--like in the ethereal “Moped” and lingering “Off to Bed.” Klingman hypnotizes you in the mesmerizing “Innocent Eyes,” a line he repeats over and over again. It’s hard to resist the power of his voice and with Love The Virgins, you just can’t help but succumb.
