Heypenny
A Jillion Kicks
Self-released

When you see comparisons to Yeasayer, Ok Go, Of Montreal and MGMT, you might have high hopes for Nashville's Heypenny's A Jillion Kicks. And fortunately they don't disappoint, with a release of electronic, danceable tracks that both defy genre and keep you moving. The album starts out with a bang with the catchy "Purple Street" which features an infectious beat and vocals dripping with attitude. With "Water" they go for a harder, punk sound, with slamming guitars, an uber-fast tempo, and irresistible vocals. The Bowie-esque "Emperor's New Clothes" is all '70s glam rock, while the '80s dance rock of "Ticket" manages to incorporate chipmunk-style vocals somehow without becoming irritating. They go heavy on the synths in songs such as "Star For All The Kidz," "You Shine," and the intense "Angels and Arches." The playful indie pop of "Pretty Day" puts a smile on your face, while the MGMT-esque "Give Me The Ball" has a beat that's hard to resist. The album keeps you dancing to the end with the dreamy haze of "Mr. Miller."
