Hoots and HellmouthThe Holy Open Secret
Hoots and Hellmouth are one of those rare bands that arrive seemingly out of nowhere and blow you away with just one song. In my case, the song was "You And All Of Us," a rollicking romp of a song that is so remarkably inviting and just plain happy that you can't help but smile. Naturally, I wanted more but I did not get it because this collection of tunes takes you all over the map but not once does it repeat itself. The next tune I fell in love with was "Three Penny Charm," a pretty, pretty, acoustic, lyrically moving and perfect number. "Dishpan Hands" will bring you to your knees in its breathtaking simplicity; a song about doing the dishes and about love and life.positively brilliant. "The Family Band" featuring the fabulous and much misunderstood trombone, is hilarious in its easy ragtime style and its comical description of a family tree. If there were report cards for albums this one would be gold stars across the board: Lyrics, musicianship, production, vocals and overall passion for music, these boys have it all. Rob Berliner, Sean Hoots, and Andrew Gray are the core of the band and then it appears that they just called up all their best friends to help make a record. Honestly, I can't recommend this CD enough--if you don't go out and buy it based on what you've just read, well, then, you're just an idiot. The Vinyl Princess |
