It was surprising to find two other bands with names similar to Virginia's Invisible Hand. Google them and you'll find a Canadian band called The Invisible Hand and another Kansas band, The Invisible Hand Band. You might have better luck with them because despite a few highlights, the weak vocals, simplistic lyrics and mostly generic-sounding power pop of Invisible Hand's self-titled debut, make for lackluster listening. Highlights include two food-themed tracks: the driving "Vegetables" and the bizarrely-titled "Once The Salad Enters Your Mind," which are bizarre enough to make you want to hear more. Likewise, the stranger, darker "This Morning Was…" and the catchy "Don't Wait For Your Third Eye" succeed in peaking your interest, but the rest of the album does not live up to the potential of these numbers. In fact, nothing else stands out; for example, "Two Chords," is utterly bland, while "Four Seasons" and "There's Room In My Will" are let down by the overly whiny vocals that don't quite fit with the songs. The addition of strings cannot save "I Want To Win," which features the chorus: "I want to win, but I don't try to win" and the silly line, "My dreams are as faded as my jeans." The vocals are "I Caught Twenty-Two" is grating and "Coy Trap" falls flat. Despite a few good moments, Invisible Hand's debut just isn't worth it.
