ALBUM REVIEW

Jeff Mellin

Love is Made of Sky
Stereoific

Jeff Mellin

Part mod, part folkie, singer/songwriter Jeff Mellin has a keen sixties pop sensibility and all the lyrical smarts one could ever need to write great songs. And write great songs, Mellin does. On Love Is Made Of Sky, a curious, but endlessly appealing E.P., Mellin showcases his penchant for the conventional and the idiosyncratic. The jangle and shimmy of  “Smile Like A Lemon Peel, Kiss Like A Paper Cut” is irresistible; “Blue Eyes, Brighton Bus Stop” is a wondrous little pop gem that wouldn’t have sounded out of place on the radio in 1967 between The Hollies and The Zombies and “Half Circles” is an elegant number of poetic self-reflection.  Later, Mellin revisits “Smile Like A Lemon Peel” and “Blue Eyes, Brighton Bus Stop” in a bare bones acoustic demo take and then he does it again, dubbing the songs “Verdant Single Mixes.” He fortifying the former with handclaps and frenetic call-and-response vocals and the latter with a more breezy, but spritely vocal take.  Sure, it’s a weird strategy, but Mellin more than pulls it off.
