ALBUM REVIEW

Jenn Mierau

Hush
Self-released

Jenn Mierau

According to her website, Jenn Mierau went the DIY route with her album, Hush, playing all the instruments and self-producing it. And while that is an impressive feat, her wholly individual effort is not completely successful. The overly breathy vocals and cheesy instrumentation of "Lovesong" makes me want to listen to The Cure original or even the Death Cab for Cutie version. She likes this song so much, she includes another version, "Lovesong (Other Version)", but you can barely tell the difference between it and the former. The title track attempts to be edgier, but her vocals are melodramatic and the music is simplistic. The second version of this track, "Hush (Other Version)" fortunately is improved by the heavier beat. The overwrought vocals are so irritating in "Hushabye," it's difficult to listen to the entire track. On the other hand, there is "A Little Blue," which is decidedly catchy. The ballad "Shine" highlights the gorgeous violin and the fact Mierau can actually sing without over-emoting. The few highlights suggest she would benefit from bringing in some additional players.
