ALBUM REVIEW
John PrineIn Person and On Stage
John Prine is the old friend you've never met and nothing is friendlier than a live show from this guy, especially when he's joined by a select group of righteous artists. I have to admit, I clicked ahead to "Mexican Home" (the perks of listening at home) with Josh Ritter and it is, as I expected, soul moving. I also wouldn't expect anything less than fabulous on "Angel from Montgomery" with Emmylou Harris and I was absolutely gobsmacked at "Paradise" featuring the Kane, Welch, Kaplin trio (Kieran Kane, Kevin Welch and Fats Kaplin) I've come to love lately after I heard them do "Postcard From Mexico." "In Spite Of Ourselves" with Iris Dement was a fave of mine from the duet album of the same name. He also does "Unwed Fathers" with Iris…so pretty. "The Late John Garfield Blues" with Sarah Watkins is a killer, too. I don't want to date John but, man, that guy has lived. Born in Illinois in 1946, he wrote some of his best songs on his mail route in Chicago back in the '70s when he was a mailman. 21 records later, not one of them a stinker, and John Prine is still fresh. The between song banter showcases Prine's trademark hilarious and sardonic observations of the world. This album, beautifully recorded, warm and welcoming, is almost as good as being there.
