My favorite singer-songwriters always put me in a contemplative mood;
there's something quite soothing about the simplicity of a singer with
a guitar. Jimmy Reeves falls into that category with his debut E.P.,
The Axe & The Tree and for the most part, it's a success.
The title track draws you in with its pounding rhythm and intense vocals.
Reeves' voice is quite beautiful on the romantic "Jonah,"
while he goes for a more country sound on both the heartbreaking "Broken
Glass Windows" and the slower-paced "Surely You'll Find."
Less successful, is the oddly titled "Ameriquality," in which
he seems to be making a commentary on the "poor man" in America,
but he doesn't get a chance to say much in the short two minute number.
The piano-based "Your Love Is A Precious Thing" comes off
as sappy, suggesting he should stick to the guitar on these tracks.
Despite those misses, it's a promising debut that makes you want to
hear more.
