Jimmy Thackery and The Drivers

With a CV that includes a fourteen-year stint with the legendary D.C. outfit The Nighthawks and nine years with the R&B group The Assassins, for four decades now Jimmy Thackery has proven to be one of the most well respected blues guitarists around. Inventive, edgy and bold, Thackery is a proven blues marksman, but his new album finds the guitarist throwing different musical elements into the mix. The rootsy "All Because Of You" has traces of both NRBQ and The Byrds; "What Part Of No" is a straight up rocker and "(You Got Me) Now What You Gonna Do" is a slyly played instrumental. The compositions on Inside Tracks are expansive—most of the songs exceed six minutes—and are executed with a sophisticated musicianship that suggests a man completely devoted to his craft: check out the brilliant solo on the smoldering "That Dog Won't Hurt" or the muscular blues of "Landlocked" for evidence of Thackery's expertise. Other notable numbers include an eight-minute reading of Chuck Berry's "The Promised Land" with drummer Mark Stutso on vocals; "Just A Feeling" suggests Making Movies-era Dire Straits and "Eat It All" is a lively musical travelogue.
