ALBUM REVIEW

Kevin Barker

You amp; Me
Gnomonsong

Kevin Barker

On his debut solo album, Vetiver guitarist Kevin Barker checks in with an eight-song set that's played with astonishing musical finesse. Produced by Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart, Vetiver) and flanked by friends like Pat Sansone (Wilco), Joanna Newsom, Jonathan Wilson (Elvis Costello) and Erick Johnson (The Shins), Barker manages to keep these proceedings spare and economical and brilliant. The breezy, sun-kissed "Little Picture Of You," sounds like Jerry Garcia fronting My Morning Jacket; "Amber" is delicate and lovely and "My Lady" suggests the fingerpicking precision of Roy Harper. The nearly eight-minute "Walking Along" has an undeniable laconic charm; "I Will Fly" is spacey and beautiful and the album closing "Bless You On Your Way" is elegant and graceful.
