ALBUM REVIEW

Katie Herzig

Apple Tree
Marion-Lorraine Records

Katie Herzig

If I had a nickel for every time someone said to me "You gotta hear this girl sing," I'd have at least a dollar sixty-five. So when my editor said it in reference to Katie Herzig and her new album Apple Tree, my first inclination was to fling it into a tree with all the others, but I didn't. I listened to it 500 times instead. It's that good. Honest. Paste Magazine put Herzig on the 25 artists to ignore at your own peril list and I tend to think they know their shit. Right out of the gate, "Songbird" is just gorgeous, melodic, lyrical and beautifully arranged with just-so instrumentation, but it passes my personal muster in that it takes you somewhere nice. Isn't that really all we're asking from music?

I feel almost the same about "I Want To Belong To You" (co-written with Kim Richey) though she crosses over into a bit of a Feist-y place here (not a bad thing, a good thing—Feist is good). "Hologram" showcases Herzig's vocal chops and she's got them to spare. "Forevermore" is another favorite for me, it's bouncy, sing-songy and cute and the lyrics are great. Herzig moved to Nashville and hired some heavy hitters to work on this record and it shows. Money well spent I say; this record should go far.

For those of you who haven't been paying attention, the secret code word on this album is "apple tree". It appears as often as the word "cocaine" on the last album I reviewed.
