Kate Miller-Heidke
Curiouser
SIN/Sony Australia

Australia's Kate Miller-Heidke is the exact shot of life that the wheezing pop genre needs to be brought back to life. Curiouser, Miller-Heidke's U.S. debut, is rife with quirky intelligence, rhythmic invention and an inherent cheekiness. In other words, real personality. "The One Thing I Know" is a slinky blast of horny new wave and percussive syncopation; the electro-grind of "Can't Shake It" finds Miller-Heidke referencing "Dancing Queen" and breakdancing, while "Motorscooter" delivers the quixotic yet tuneful vocal delivery that Gwen Stefani has been pining for her whole career. Elsewhere, "I Like You Better When You're Not Around" is the best song the Cars never wrote; "Politics In Space" boasts a bizarrely satisfying call and response, and "Our Song" demonstrates that a ballad need not be overly sentimental to be overly sentimental. What a relief.
