Keane
Perfect Symmetry
Interscope

Dearest Ducklings, Keane's gorgeous Tim Rice-Oxley and his magical synthesizer, and those other 2 guys in his band, are back in fine form with Perfect Symmetry. Mercy me, I am positively damp from listening to this new up-tempo direction from those wan Brit-balladeers.
The opening track "Spiraling" is so dishy-delicious it makes one want to leap upon the nearest dance floor and do the "Electric Chicken" with shirtless, nubile, pasty young men. From someone who routinely has thrown his hotel room keys at Clay Aiken, I must tell you, I love a cute boy group! The retro-80's feel of the track "Better than This," with its "Ashes to Ashes" keyboard sound, brings me back to a time when Michael Jackson still had functioning nostrils and owning a Sony Walkman meant you were ready for the future. But, Ducklings, with the title track "Perfect Symmetry" the old Keane resurfaces, like that tough patch of skin on one's forehead that even the best apricot scrub imported from Iceland can't remove. It's lovely to hear Tim's former self coming through all those click-tracks. The rest of this album is pop music at its apex, like the love-child of Spandau Ballet and the Thompson Twins, if they both weren't tragically infertile due to excessive hair gel abuse. Girlfriends, get ready to clutch your pearls!

Your beloved Chauncey
