From the Bush administration's refusal to protect polar bears to the cruel practices of the meat and dairy industry to the hunting of whales, mankind's list of egregious acts of violence against animals is one that is long and shameful. The Washington D.C.-based organization Compassion Over Killing has done everything from furnishing restaurants who want to have a more compassionate and alternative menu with vegetarian starter kits to being at the forefront of high profile animal advocacy campaigns, and it's one of the most respected non-profits around. Benefiting Compassion Over Killing, Keep Singing! is an enervating collection of speedbag hardcore and confessional indie rock. Of the punk rock, Strike Anywhere's "You Are Not Collateral Damage" and Life At These Speeds' "Waefae" are particularly rousing, while Off Minor's "Abattoir" and In First Person's "Shades Of Grey" are muscular blasts of metallic punk. Elsewhere, set to a spare beat, Gina Young's "Too Cool To Cry" effortlessly recounts the same frustrating conversation vegans have had with meat eaters for years; Sean McArdle's acoustic "I Go Shopping" is decidedly moving; and Des_Ark's post-punk lullaby "Punks In The Park" is a wistful confessional.

Extras: A PDF containing lyrics and some of the artist's favorite vegan recipes, like Strike Anywhere's "Vegan Chicks And Dumplings."
