The press release for keygrip's debut EP, vis-à-vis, describes it as, "melodic Brit-pop with hints of 80's influence and modern day eclectic indie-rock." And they're partly right. "Desire On Fire" is quintessential indie-rock in sound: catchy with careening guitars. Later, the band goes acoustic for the driving "The Warning," and you can really hear the 80's influence in the heavy "If You Were Me." However, eclectic this collection of songs is not, and if anything, it suffers from a lack of imagination. "If I Could (You Know I Would)" and "Otherside" drone along; the ballad "Breath" lacks emotion and "Nothing But You To Lose" seems to operate under the impression that louder is better, which it definitely is not in this case.. With a few exceptions, this EP just doesn't demand attention the way that it should. It's not really bad or good, and that's its biggest problem. It's just blah.
