ALBUM REVIEW

Lo-Pro

The Beautiful Sounds of Revenge
Rocket Science

Lo-Pro

Everyone loves a good comeback story.

Until recently, a lot of people thought Lo-Pro were finished. But their long awaited sophomore effort The Beautiful Sounds of Revenge firmly puts that particular Internet rumor to rest. Disillusioned by the "business side of music" the band retrenched and has produced an LP that is both cathartic and confident. It might be tempting to label this as an angry album--and the first few cuts are indeed angry (the song "Texas" is downright petulant with the lyric "Maybe I did it all because I wanted to"), but Lo-Pro is actually taking us, lyrically, on a journey through the anger. There are layers here and in fact, some unexpected depth. Musically, however the first third of the album sounds pretty much the same. The first four cuts blur together until the explosive "Ingenious" blasts us out of our rapidly forming complacency; this is straight up rock, with hard, driving guitar riffs and balls-to-the-wall drumming courtesy of former Godsmack drummer Tommy Stewart. And then it switches gears again with the sweeping vocals of frontman Pete Murray in "Say," a tender, almost wistful look back at mistakes made and hope for the future; this is the point where the journey takes a turn away from anger and towards a more resilient, possibly even hopeful attitude. The album ends with "Letting Go," an ode to acceptance and moving on.

Frank Sinatra once said, "the best revenge is massive success." With this album, it seems that Lo-Pro may find both.
