ALBUM REVIEW

Lohio

Family Trees
Self-released

Lohio

You can definitely hear the Sufjan Stevens influence on Lohio's EP Family Trees. It's in everything from Greg Dutton's voice to the variety of instruments the band employs. Still, the intricate melodies and delicate vocals make this indie pop release stand out. There is an uplifting quality at the start that just puts you in a good a mood. "Leave the City, Leave Your Room" drives along with gorgeous harmonies, while the insanely catchy "Family Tree" is very Belle and Sebastian-esque. They go off into a different direction with the wailing guitars of "Wind And Leaves," which has a nice groove to it. This change is short-lived as they return to their perky playfulness on "Adelai," which has an upbeat tempo that just makes you want to move. There is a sadness to the appropriately-titled "Funeral Song," with its soft vocals and layered instrumentation. With only five songs, this EP will leave you wanting more. Here's hoping they come out with a debut album soon.
