ALBUM REVIEW

The Love X Nowhere

High Score Blackout

The Love X Nowhere

It helps to have a few surprises up your sleeve and that's exactly what San Francisco's The Love X Nowhere (TLXN) offer on their debut album, High Score Blackout. It's an intriguing blend of genres, with songs going off in unexpected, but most certainly welcomed directions. Although quite different in style, both the driving urgency of "Din" and the melodic "Knockoff" stand out as the album's catchiest tracks. With heavy distortion and a driving beat, "Another Monkey On The Vine" starts off like any other hard rock song, but the piano and trumpet are the perfect addition. Similarly, the keyboards are just the right touch on the more straightforward rock of "Terra Fuego." The bizarre title track "High Score Blackout," has almost no vocals and combines a Native American vibe with elements of jazz. The dreamy mood of songs such as "Tomorrow's Retreat" and the beautiful "Twilight Mourning" culminate with the hazy, laid-back psychedelic rock of "Gooseberry." Inventive songs marking a impressive debut that's definitely worth attention.
