Matthew Puckett

The L.A. based singer/songwriter Matthew Puckett may be best known for his music appearing on television shows like "Boston Med," "Still Single" and "Gravity," but Puckett's new album is his real signature work. Combining his bottomless gift for melody with a poetic sensitivity, Puckett's Red Flowers is a rich and textured song cycle about sorrow and joy. The rolling piano pop of "Bye Bye" and the lush rocker "Everything I Want" are both exhilarating; "Sweetheart" is romantic melodiscm at its best and told from the cabin of a soaring airplane the acoustic "Land" is contemplative and searching. The hushed and honeyed "Gardenia" is buoyed by layers of harmonies that elegantly suggest Matthew Sweet's "Your Sweet Voice," while the gently stirring "Wake Me" is imploring and perfect. "I've Been Waiting" closes these proceedings with Puckett reprising the song's title over and over against a plangent backbeat. It's wistful. It's triumphant. It's both. But that's Matthew Puckett's great charm as a songwriter—whether his heart is broken or swollen with happiness, he'll always bring you to your knees.
