ALBUM REVIEW
Matthew RyanDear Lover
Well, I am gobsmacked. I just realized that Mathew Ryan is now a Nashville folk/rocker. At least that's what his "people" are calling him. The boy from Pennsylvania first had my ear with the song "I Hear a Symphony" from his album East Autumn Grin (which still makes appearances on my mixes) and I just assumed (oh, never assume), he was a Brooklyn Poet or something along those lines. Nashville? WTF? Folk/rocker? I don't really even know what that means. Anyhoo, his new record, Dear Lover is a big dollop of the Ryan I love and a sprinkling of the more amped up U2-ish stuff that I don't like quite as much. The ponderous opening track, "City Life" is heartfelt and moving and it's the Ryan I love; so is "Some Streets Lead Nowhere," but my favorite is "End Of A Ghost Story." Lyrically, Ryan never ever disappointshis poetic lines dive fearlessly into relationship ruins and rubble without a backward glance and he always has a fresh take on the human condition. He's one of those unblinking lyricists that take you somewhere you'd really rather not go and then suddenly you're weeping in the supermarket parking lot, cursing him. Matthew Ryan can do that. He's great at it. The Vinyl Princess |
