Mama's Boy

Although he rose to prominence as the grating nitwit Napoleon Dynamite, actor Jon Heder's man-child/boy-baby shtick has grown old. Fast. Ironically, he could learn something from the songs of his new film Mama's Boy because even with several decades behind them, they're as fresh as ever. Although recounting what winceworthy preposterous montages director Tim Hamilton (Truth In Advertising) has placed them in, The Jam's "The Modern World" and Billy Bragg's "Bed, Bath and Bullshit" sound as perfect as ever. The inane plot here finds a just about thirty Heder living at home with his mom (Diane Keaton) and going to war with her new boyfriend (Jeff Daniels). Hilarity ensues. Or tries to ensue. Or dies in the process of ensuing. If someone you love or owe a favor to drags you to this, just close your eyes and listen to Paul Weller rip through "Art School" and "But I'm Different Now." It doesn't hurt that there are also classics by Generation X ("Ready Steady Go") and The English Beat ("Hands Off She's Mine") or that Mark Mothersbaugh (The Royal Tenenbaums) is at the helm here, contributing his own cinematic instrumentals, but Heder's films are frat boy throwaways and this music deserves better company.
