Miggs
Wide Awake
Rock Ridge Music

The first cut on Miggs' Wide Awake, had me. "Let The Games Begin" is edgy, a little dark and has the driving beat of an anthem. It announces itself and offers a promise of great things to come. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't live up to that promise. Wide Awake, the fourth album for Miggs, is squarely in pop-rock territory; accessible and innocuous but not exactly significant. It is however, more interesting lyrically than musically. "Girls & Boys" takes us back to the joys of high school with the greeting "welcome to your teenage nightmare" while "Sincerity" (where Don Miggs channels Rob Thomas) takes a philosophic view of life and knowledge with "What you think you know is rarely what you really know." After this, the album begins its downward slide to the treacly finale "Crawl Inside." The band Miggs is made up of Don Miggs, Ryan Scarborough and Michael Lombardo and although Miggs has been around for quite awhile, this current configuration has only been together for 2 years. The trio is extremely reminiscent of Matchbox 20 and Fall Out Boy, but I doubt they'll achieve the commercial success of either of those bands. It's not that they aren't good, they just aren't remarkable. The timing of their latest album, though, couldn't be better. This is the type of music that is perfect for summer; engaging, accessible, entertaining but not particularly memorable. Like a summer fling, a great diversion for a few weeks but in the end not something you'll spend your life with.
