The Mixtures
Stompin’ At The Rainbow
Minky Records

Taking the cue for their name from their multi-racial lineup, the Mixtures’ membership diversity extended far past their titular choice. Combining elements of rock and roll, surf, jazz, blues, Latin music, ska and soul, this Pomona outfit were true musical pioneers. With the first half of the album recorded live at the legendary Rainbow club, this twenty-five-track collection demonstrates how the band could rev up a crowd at will. Numbers like “Surfers Stomp,” the flirtatious grind of “The Peppermint Twist” or the positively furious boogie of “One Degree North” all evince a band that could do just about anything. The remaining thirteen numbers here are for the most part comprised of 45 RPM Singles recorded in the studio. “Canadian Sunset” is a sneaky little shuffle; “It’s Gonna Work Out Fine” is a perfect blend of surf and jazz and “The Last Minute” is a boogie-woogie rave up that’s as pure and joyful as they come.
