Strange Song
Independent

For her second album Canada’s Nadia Kazmi tips her hat to her fellow countryman Leonard Cohen by taking on nine of his songs. A singer of tremendous range and power, Kazmi also has winning interpretive instincts. Cohen’s cadences and phrasing are decidedly singular and covering his work can be tricky business. But Kazmi is up to the task and Strange Song is a convincing effort loaded with intensity and urgency.“Why Don’t You Try” is reworked into a flaming, desperate rocker; “I’m Your Man” is given a muscular makeover and “True Love Leaves No Traces” starts as a siren-song and somersaults beautifully into a scorching sing-along. Later, “Ain’t No Cure For Love” stays true to its meditative original; “Paper Thin Hotel” crawls with a primal sexuality and “Hey, That’s No Way To Say Goodbye” ends these proceedings with a burning regret.
