Low-fi pop heroes National Pastime have perfected the art of the subtle hook. Inspired by everyone from The Stranglers to the June Brides, this Exeter outfit have a sneaky and cunning charm. Capable of soaring pop ("Lake Geneva") or jangling rockers ("Fine Line") this is a band that knows how to get to the heart of a song. "Consolation Prize" is doleful and catchy, "The Girl With The Long Brown Hair" is a melodic cautionary tale and "Jupiter And Mars" is a punchy little gem. Singer Andrew Padfield sounds like the low-fi cousin of Edwyn Collins, while guitarist Andy Botterill plays slinky leads that wind around each number with elegant muscle.
