It's always a pleasure to review a local band. On a personal level, it's the chance to find out about someone new to support in your area, and on a broader scale, it's a chance to promote them and perhaps help them find new fans. Such is the case for San Francisco's The New Up. What first strikes you when you hear their E.P. Broken Machine, is ES Pitcher's voice, which soars over the ethereal instrumentation of the title track. Her voice has been compared to The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde, and it shows on songs such as the soothingly drawn out "Ginger Tea." Their sound ranges from the dream-like to the more upbeat, as in "Top of the Stairs." With the intense "Just Because" they maintain their "trippy new wave" sound, as the press blurb calls it, but manage to make it catchy at the same time. An impressive collection of songs and like any good E.P., it makes you want to hear more.
