ALBUM REVIEW

Octomutt

Please Betty Please
Independent

Octomutt

The mellow precision of the San Francisco duo Octomutt (Ted Savarese and Ashley Adams) recalls everyone from Mark Knopfler to Ry Cooder. On the band's new Ben Vaughn-produced E.P. Please Betty, they check in with five rootsy numbers that, in true Octomutt fashion, are never in a hurry to get anywhere, but with finesse and grace get there all the same. Savarese, with his laconic charm and Adams with her elegant bass lines, make each track shine with an understated brilliance. Flanked by a guestlist that includes Tony Gilkyson, Kevin Jarvis and Vaughn chipping in on keyboards, tracks like "St. Clair's Shore," the slinky "Current" and the gently swaying title track particularly winning.
