Oh No! Oh My!

Austin’s Oh No! Oh My! fall somewhere between The Decemberists and Camper Van Beethoven, but to be fair, that is merely an approximation of this young band’s sonic reach. It’s a good place to start, but these youngsters (they’re all about nineteen) are just getting started and could very well be beyond those two reference points before we know it. In other words, they’ve got the quirky rhythms of the Flaming Lips (“Our Mouths Were Wet”), and the fearlessness of Arcade Fire, but they might end up being quirkier and braver. We’ve got to wait—you see my point. For now, this is a refreshing blast of twisted folk, acoustic post-punk and inspired backporch filly fally. Check out the irresistible “The Party Punch,” or the driveway battlemarch “The Bike, Sir” to get an idea of what these kids are up to. The closer “A Pirate’s Anthem” is a breezy blend of bells and banjoes and seafaring beauty. You won’t get to bottom of it, but you’ll keep trying.

Rookies of the Year for sure.
