Penelope is a modern day fairy tale about a young woman born with a pig's snout for a nose. Played by Christina Ricci, Penelope has been, for the most part, confined to the house by her ashamed parents (Catherine O'Hara, Richard E. Grant). One look at her singular sow's feature makes prospective wooers head for the door, and so the lovely Penelope remains alone. However, when Max (James McAvoy) is hired by a journalist to pose as a paramour to get pictures of Penelope, the story takes an unexpected turn. Featuring original music by Joby Talbot (The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy) as well as tracks by Meiko, Stars and DeVotchka, Penelope is one of the most enlivening soundtracks of the year. A former member of the Divine Comedy, Talbot, who has a broad and original understanding of cinematic music, may very well be the next Danny Elfman. From the sprightly and quirky narrative of "The Story of The Curse (Parts 1 & 2)" to the exhilarating "Penelope Breaks Free" Talbot demonstrates a light and distinct touch as well as a rare musical finesse. Augmenting the collection are fine numbers by Stars ("Ageless Beauty"), Paper Moon ("String Of Blinking Lights") and The Secret 6 ("Give In").
