ALBUM REVIEW
PlayVarious Artists If you want your eight-year-old to get into indie rock you can leave a copy of Tigermilk under their pillow or play Slanted And Enchanted every night during dinner and hope that something sticks. But you and I both know that there's a damn good chance they're going to come home from school and ask you to take them to the Hannah Montana concert. The trick is easing them into it and Play is the way to do it. Billed as "Cool Music For Cool Kids" this first installment of the Play series finds folks like the Young Fresh Fellows, Supersuckers and Mary Timony checking in with songs aimed at kids that their parents will secretly be putting on their IPOD's. Anna Oxygen's spacey "Born To Shake" is tremendous fun, Sgt. Major's take on the Toy Dolls' already playful "Nellie The Elephant" is terrific and Mudhoney's "I Like To Make Noise And Break Things" is one of the best songs around for encouraging youthful individuality. Elsewhere, there's Georgie James' anti-hunting shuffle "The Grizzly Jive", The Cassettes' splendid cover of T. Rex's "Truck On Truck" and Visqueen's interpretation of John Fogerty's "Centerfield" which is undoubtedly the album's true highlight. Note: A portion of the profits from Play go to The Vera Project: www.theveraproject.com and The Patricia M. Sitar Center For The Arts: www.sitarcenter.org Alex Green |
