The Probe
You Know You Want It

Frat boys the world over will rejoice in discovering The Probe's You Know You Want It. I'm not sure the rest of us will join them in that celebration.
The L.A. based band, which specializes in stripped down but immature punk metal has put together their first album featuring the energetic work of long time collaborators Anthony Cossa and Jim Miller. And despite the rampant misogyny (in addition to the name of the album, the contact info actually lists an email with "Dirty Sanchez" in the address) there is some great musicianship on the album.
The Probe sounds like early punk; what a lot of purists would call true punk but without the real grit evoked by bands like Black Flag or The Buzzcocks. It's like listening to an impression of one of those bands. I kept thinking, "Damn, this would be awesome if Pete Shelley were singing."
Despite that, there is some really great stuff on You Know You Want It. For example, the killer bass line on "Love Sandwich," courtesy of Ryan Wardell along with the amazing guitar work Cossa displays throughout the album. While "Pumpkin Lover," an apparent ode to sex with produce (I'm not kidding), showcases Miller's prowess on the drums. But The Probe is at their headbanging, pogo-ing finest on cuts like "Rocket Sauce" and "Theory Of Nothing." Unfortunately, both of those cuts contain lyrics like "What about equal rights? What about you get me a beer?" (still not kidding) that displays the emotional depth and maturity of a Tickle Me Elmo.
Overall, You Know You Want It is a lot like going to a frat party. On the surface it's a lot of fun but then you realize that Neanderthal in the corner has just made eye contact with you...
